We studied wind turbine noise propagation in a hilly terrain through numerical simulation in different scenarios. The sound pressure levels obtained for a wind turbine in front of a 2D hill and a wind turbine on a hilltop are compared to a baseline flat case. The source height and wind speed strongly influence sound propagation downwind. Topography influences the wake shape, inducing changes in the sound propagation that modify the sound pressure level and amplitude modulation downwind.

The selection of a suitable site for the installation of a wind turbine plays an important role in ensuring a safe operating lifetime of the structure. In this study, we show that mixture density networks can accelerate this process by inferring functions from data that can accurately map the environmental conditions to the loads but also propagate the uncertainty from the inflow to the response.

Measurements of wind turbine wakes with scanning lidar instruments contain complex errors. We model lidars in a simulated environment to understand how and why the measured wake may differ from the true wake and validate the results with observational data. The lidar smooths out the wake, making it seem more spread out and the slowdown of the winds less pronounced. Our findings provide insights into best practices for accurately measuring wakes with lidar and interpreting observational data.

An extended Kalman filter is used to estimate the wind impinging on a wind turbine based on the blade bending moments and a turbine model. Using large-eddy simulations, this paper verifies how robust the estimator is to the turbine control strategy as it impacts loads and operating parameters. It is shown that including dynamics in the turbine model to account for delays between actuation and bending moments is needed to maintain the accuracy of the estimator when dynamic pitch control is used.

The ability to perform reliable simulations of the motion behaviour of floating offshore wind turbines (FOWTs) is a key requirement for developing resource- and cost-effective designs. To support the development of suitable simulation methods, multiple improvements to the validation process of such methods are presented. These improvements allow, for the first time, the transient aerodynamic loads acting on a FOWT in a wave tank experiment to be directly compared with simulations.

When standing still without a nacelle or blades, the vibrations on a wind turbine tower are of concern to its structural health. This study finds that the air which flows around the tower recirculates behind the tower, forming so-called wakes. These wakes initiate the vibration, and the movement itself causes the vibration to increase or decrease depending on the wind speed. The current study uses a methodology called force partitioning to analyse this in depth.

Wind turbines are increasing in size and operate more frequently above the atmospheric surface layer, which requires improved inflow models for numerical simulations of turbine interaction. In this work, a novel steady-state model of the atmospheric boundary layer (ABL) is introduced. Numerical wind turbine flow simulations subjected to shallow and tall ABLs are conducted, and the proposed model shows improved performance compared to other state-of-the-art steady-state models.

An extensive set of met mast data offshore northwestern Europe are used to reduce uncertainty in offshore wind speed and turbulence intensity. The performance of widely used industry standard relationships is quantified, while some new empirical relationships are derived for practical application. Motivations include encouraging appropriate convergence of traditionally separate technical disciplines within the rapidly growing offshore wind energy industry.

We explore the effect of blade modifications on offshore wind turbines' performance through a detailed analysis of 12 turbines over 12 years. Introducing the turbine performance integral method, which utilises time-series decomposition that combines various data sources, we uncover how blade wear, repairs and software updates impact efficiency. The findings offer valuable insights into improving wind turbine operations, contributing to the enhancement of renewable energy technologies.
